As soon as once more, Oshawa named one in all Canada’s ‘rattiest’ cities: Knowledgeable tips about maintaining rodents away

Once again, Orkin Canada has named Oshawa as one of the

Oshawa once again has the stomach-turning recognition of being one of Canada’s “rattiest” cities.

Orkin Canada has released its annual list of the rattiest cities in Canada, ranked by the number of rat and mouse treatments the pest control company performed at residential and commercial properties from August 2021 to July 2022.

Oshawa comes in at number 23 and is the only city in Durham on the list this year — Oshawa has appeared on the list in past years as well.

Other GTA cities that landed in the top 25 for 2022 include Toronto in the number one spot, Mississauga at number five, Scarborough at number 11 and Brampton at number 18.

Rats have been an ongoing issue in Oshawa for years – in 2017, city council voted to start tracking reports of rats.

This past summer, Ward 5 Regional and City Councilor Brian Nicholson shared rat control tips on Facebook and the post was met with more than 100 comments from residents, with some calling for weekly garbage pick up as a way to control rodents.

The City of Oshawa say construction activity and changing seasons prompt rats and mice to seek indoor shelter.

“Rodents eat almost anything, breed quickly, damage buildings and can carry pathogens that may transmit disease to humans,” the City of Oshawa website says noting, “mice need only a six millimeter space and rats a 12 millimeter space to get through an opening .”

The City of Oshawa’s tips to control rats include: storing garbage in rodent-proof containers with tight-fitting lids, placing garbage and compost at the curb on the morning of collection as opposed to the night before; cleaning up any food sources outside such as bird seed, fallen fruit from trees, pet food and unprotected composters; clearing brush, tall grass and trash from around your property; and sealing any holes in buildings including under garages, sheds and porches.

Orkin Canada also offers rat control tips as well as information on rat diet, life cycle and behaviour.

Oshawa residents are asked to report rats in their neighborhood to Service Oshawa at [email protected] or 905-436-3311.

If the source of the rats is known, the city will initiate a property standards complaint. If the source isn’t known, the city will work to determine the source and analyze the extent of the problem.
