A garbage bin fire broke out in downtown Oshawa in the early morning hours of Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Oshawa Fire Services received a call at 2:07 am reporting smoke and flames in the area of ​​Simcoe and John Streets, explained Oshawa Deputy Fire Chief Stephen Barkwell.

When crews arrived, they found a garbage bin on fire behind a multi-use building. The low-rise Simcoe Street building has a restaurant and hair salon on the main level and apartment units above.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and cleared the scene just before 3 am, added Deputy Chief Barkwell. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
