Oshawa has decided to close City Hall and moved all committee meetings scheduled for the day of the Queen’s funeral.
Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday, Sept. 8. Across Durham, leaders have issued statements mourning the loss of the long-reigning monarch and expressed their condolences for the Royal Family. Flags were lowered to half-mast.
Oshawa residents have been able to sign a community condolence book online at oshawa.ca or in-person at Oshawa City Hall (50 Center St. S.), the Delpark Homes Center (1661 Harmony Rd N), and the South Oshawa Community Centre (1455 Cedar St.).
“This is indeed a sorrowful time in our nation’s history and for the residents of Oshawa. On behalf of Oshawa city council and the residents of Oshawa, we express our deepest sorrow on the passing of Queen Elizabeth II,” said Mayor Dan Carter.
The Queen’s funeral is on Monday, Sept. 19 in London, England. The federal government has declared a federal holiday on the day of the funeral. The Ontario government has decided to mark the day with a day of mourning, rather than a civic holiday.
In honor of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, Oshawa City Hall and Service Oshawa will be closed on Monday, Sept 19. The City of Oshawa has moved the committee meetings planned for Monday, Sept 19 to the next day, Tuesday, Sept 20 .
“Canadians are grateful for Her Majesty’s decades of service to Canada and the common wealth, and are mourning her death,” said regional Coun. Bob Chapman. “Her Majesty’s funeral will take place on Sept. 19 … The City of Oshawa council committee meetings calendar includes meetings of the finance committee and community services committee on this date.”
On Tuesday, Sept. 20 the finance committee meeting is at 9:30 am and the community services committee meeting is at 1:30 pm in the council chamber at Oshawa City Hall.
