“Shocked and heartbroken:” Six-year-old woman drowns at a “huge home social gathering” in northern Oshawa
Residents of a neighborhood in northern Oshawa describe feelings of concern and then shock after a six-year-old girl was reported missing on Saturday night.
The child drowned at what the police called a “big house party”.
Julie Poirier was outside gardening after dinner on Saturday when a neighbor told her that a little girl nearby had disappeared.
“As a mother, your heart just falls. I was wondering if she was kidnapped? says Poirier, who started walking up and down the street to see if she could find out more or help in any way. “We heard a while later that she had died. I was just shocked and heartbroken to hear that.”
Police were called to a house near Birchview Drive and Ormond Drive at around 7:00 p.m. on June 12 for reports of a large gathering.
When they arrived, the police were told that a six-year-old girl was missing.
The police searched the property and found the child in the pool. A police officer pulled the girl out and the officers performed a resuscitation until the paramedic arrived.
The girl was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Haniya Rajput, who lives in the neighborhood, was at Parkwood Meadows Park with her kids on Saturday night when a friend posted a Facebook post saying that a girl was “seven years old” and wearing a pink swimsuit in the neighborhood will be missed.
“I was very worried this is a very young child,” she says. “We went home and looked everywhere to see if we could see anything.”
Rajput says there was a large police presence in the neighborhood and that a lot of people were outside looking for the girl.
The police are reminding the public to “exercise extreme caution in dealing with water security during the summer months”.
