Oshawa’s newest dessert food truck is capturing the sugary, deep fried joy of treats found at summer fairs and places like the CNE.
Catherine Ferguson and Jennifer Kerr are sisters and co-owners of Aunt Boppy’s Place, which opened mid-May at 381 Taunton Rd. E.
As first-time small business owners, the pair knew they wanted to focus on sweets.
“It was a nostalgia thing for me. When I was a kid going to places like Wonderland and the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition), I loved the food,” says Kerr, who has worked in the restaurant industry for more than 30 years.
“And, food like this is just fun,” Ferguson adds.
The menu includes bubble waffles, which come with a scoop of ice cream, a dusting of icing sugar and toppings like sprinkles, gummy bears or chocolate sauce.
“They’re light and airy and delicious,” says Ferguson, describing the waffles, which have bubbles instead of indents.
There’s also funnel cake with a variety of toppings like the “Double Double (icing sugar, vanilla ice cream and coffee sauce) and treats including deep fried Oreos, deep fried bananas with cinnamon sugar, and a gooey deep fried PB and J sandwich.
“We’re still new, not a lot of people know we’re there or what we have to offer, but we’re getting amazing feedback from the customers we’ve had. We’re getting repeat customers already,” Ferguson says.
One question they’re hearing often — what does the truck’s name mean?
“Boppy” was Kerr’s nickname as a child and it stuck around into adulthood, eventually making her Aunt Boppy to her siblings’ children.
With their first summer as small business owners ahead, the sisters are looking forward to being their own bosses and serving up the kind of food that puts smiles on people’s faces.
“This is a place you can come if you really want to treat yourself,” Ferguson says.
