A suspect who fled a robbery in Oshawa jumped off a bridge and then stormed into a house where he was overpowered and held by local residents, police said.

The wild series of events began at around 9:21 p.m. on Saturday, June 5, when officers were called to a Petro Canada station on Simcoe Street South to report a robbery, Durham police said. A suspect smashed a cash register and then ran away with money, police said.

Police were chasing a suspect as he escaped on foot along Wentworth Street until the man jumped over Wentworth Bridge, police said.

The suspect made his way to a house on Fundy Court and forced his way inside, but was held by tenants until police arrived to arrest him.
